Primary Teaching

Postby Tenacious Tubbs on Wed Jan 27, 2010 11:22 pm

Hi everyone,

I've been seriously looking into teacher training and teaching as a career, and after a couple of visits to schools I feel I'd prefer to work in Foundation or KS1.

The only thing that's concerning me really is that all the teachers I have met tend to be quite young. Don't get me wrong I'm only 24 myself, but the teachers in this area that I've met seem to be only around 30, at the most 35-ish.

I know it probably sounds silly, but how much of a long-term career path is it? Or is it just my limited experience? Also, having trained for that age range, how easy / difficult is it to move into teaching another age range?

I appreciate any replies, thanks for reading!

There are plenty of primary teachers around older than the ones you have met.

Hi there :)
I have been teaching for 33 years in Primary Schools. It is true that the staff are getting younger and younger generally but there are still plenty of golden oldies about like me lol.
If you have a good headteacher then you should be actively encouraged to move to different stages, especially if you are going to be looking for promotion.
Good luck whatever you decide. :)
