Teachers and Technology

Postby Jo_uea on Mon Nov 17, 2008 8:51 pm

I'm doing a BA in education and as part of my course i am required to develop a group project about technology in education.

i wondered if anyone would be interested in sharing their experiences of using technology in the classroom as a teacher. For example, have you ever experienced any difficulty concerning the use of educational technology? What equipment have you used? Do you feel adequately trained in using different technologies? Do you feel that technology is used creatively?

just a few ideas. i'd be very greatful if anyone could help.

Thank you!

Hi

I was previously the Head of Music at a school in Manchester. We went from about 16 students taking GCSE music to about 180 in Years 10 and 11 taking a mixutre of GCSE Music and NCFE Music Technology. Technology was particulalry successful and the students really responded to it. We also had a recording studio and this supported it. The Music department (although I have now left) now has 4 ICT music suites for about 25-30 students in each classroom.

The curriculum relied on allowing the students an almost unlimited amount of creative freedom and time to develop their musical ideas. They never got bored of it and attendance was much higher in these lessons than others. It also had a high pass rate.

If this is of interest to you please e-mail me at peterbmason@googlemail.com and we will arrange to have a conversation about this.

My primary school is very creative with technology. In the last five years we have gone from basic old stand along pcs in classrooms with a 10 station suite for over 630 children... to four trolleys of tablet computers, tablet pcs for every teacher, a range of control equipment, visualisers in every class room and a completely wireless solution around the school. It has transformed the way all subjects are taught, not just ICT. Yes there have been problems, and yes sometimes as ICT leader it can be really stressful to maintain such an amount of equipment, but the benefits outweigh the problems.
Our children from reception to yr6 use all equipment, not just pcs but robots, cameras and video cameras. The equipment is used throughout all subjects and both indoors and outdoors! It has enhanced both the children's learning and the teaching methods available for the teachers to use.

Hope that helps! :)

With the advancement of technology, teaching strategies are also getting refined. Every online teaching company use different software and tools. It is must for the teachers to work for some time with the company/institution in managing the teaching indirectly to gain sufficient experience and also being friendly with the tools.

Sometimes its all bout going out there and finding out about new resources for yourself.
Good schools invest in new ideas, but those ideas have to come from somewhere!

There are lots of teaching kits available to help with promoting, science and technology, they don't have to be expensive, and sometimes all you need is some base materials, to kick start a new learning experience.
Take a look at http://www.mutr.co.uk/

It is absolutely a fantastic experience to use technology in the classroom as a teacher. I teach both ICT and Numeracy. So it is important for me to use technology to teach ICT anyway. I have also noticed that my students are totally engaged when I use technology during numeracy/math lessons. There are many applications, software and websites available online for teachers to teach their subject specialism. For instance, there is the math games available on http://www.mangahigh.com. Also, there is an easy-to-use program for eTeaching, http://www.showdocument.com – It’s a free online tool for eTeaching, web-conferencing and more. You can simply upload a document and view it online with others. Google also has its own. They are all used creatively.
