Got me through PGCE - 2010-08-18

This is THE book to buy for essential, real world tips on your PGCE - but most importantly, to get you through your Professional Studies essays. One concept still comes to mind "withitness" - what Chris Kyriacou calls that ability to scan a classroom and know exactly what every student is doing.

I wish all teachers would re-read this book as part of their CPD.

Helping Hand - 2009-12-11

This book is a comprehensive, straightforward aid in gaining the skills to become a good teacher. It is compact and easy to read. Recommended for all trainee teachers or teachers who want to improve their practice. Think of it as a helping hand on your way to becoming an educator. :)

Essential Teaching skills - 2009-10-27

Good product, easy to read. I think that this book will be relevant for teachers for years to come!

Very difficult read - 2009-08-13

I bought this book because it seemed like a good all-rounder, and was small (and therefor likely to be concise and easy to read). Indeed, the back cover quotes the Times Educational Supplement as follows:

"Chris Kyriacou... knows how to communicate."

It also describes the author's writing style as "familiar and accessible".

I have found neither of these to be the case. The book is needlessly wordy, uses very long sentences with many different points, and seems to spend more time justifying it's existence by quoting research defining what a teaching skill actually is. It reads like "some teachers have been found to do x, and some evidence suggests that this may be a tactic employed by teachers who are found by those deemed competent to judge as being successful."

What I want is a book telling me concisely and clearly what I need to know or learn to be a good teacher. What I want is "You should do x." And in counterintuitive cases, "You should do x because."

I'm sure if I managed to actually take in any of the sentences in the book, there might well be some information in there, hence the second star. But really, the point of a book should surely be to present information in a readable way, and not just present information.

Very "Essential" - 2009-02-08

An excellent handbook to a GTP or PGCE year with invaluable information and work on theories.
