High expectations - 2010-08-15

I had high expectations of this book after reading many reviews. However, following reading the book I found I was disappointed. As a new primary school teacher I found that most of the advice is second nature to me anyway after going through a 3 year degree to qualify (as most people will have who will be reading the book). I found myself on numerous occasions thinking, 'well of course i would do that anyway'. I believe this book would perhaps be more useful to a secondary teacher who has to teach many classes of children rather than just one, there is a lot of examples for secondary teaching which made the book a bit general for a primary school teacher. I found other books by this author much more interesting e.g. 'Getting the buggers to behave'.

Excellent - 2010-08-12

A book which makes the prospect of teaching much less daunting- through, but not so full of detail as to be a hard read. Lots of good ideas.

All the help I can get - 2010-07-27

With only weeks before I start teaching, I need all the advise I can get and this book has plenty. Lots of practical tips and ideas of things to do over the summer in preparation. A must buy.

For new teachers - 2010-02-25

This is good for tips on how to survive starting out teaching. We all have high expectations when we start to teach, but boy are we smacked down to earth in the real classroom. Good book to keep your spirits up.

excellent practical resource - 2009-10-24

This review is just a fly-by overview of the book as I haven't fully read the book yet.
I'll probably add to my evaluation later, as time goes and as I read through it.

I believe that reading this book is an excellent way of spending free time for an NQT or even a trainee teacher such as myself.
In my situation it is an invaluable source of use of the language as this is the fourth spoken language for me and the third I've been educated the sciences on...

However, I belive that it will be equally useful for a native English speaking teacher who just started teaching.

It is also very important for me to improve my self-reflective skills and writing reflections. This book has been helping me not just improving my writing, but also developing the teacher specific thinking.

It is very practical, well structured and covers nearly all aspects of the teaching profession.
Of course it is not subject specific...If it was it would have had a size of an encyclopedia.

Actually, talking encyclopedia...I think it can well be used as a reference book or a sort of practical encyclopedia...although its structure isn't like of an encyclopedia...
